STOP PRESS: BECKHAM'S ARE BUYING THE WHEELCHAIR SEE 'LATEST NEWS'
Our son, Flynn Ramsden, is 7 years old and has an extremely rare condition called Cerebellum Atrophy caused by Ubiquinone Deficiency. Indeed it is so rare that his consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital doesn’t know of another child in the UK with this condition. It affects, amongst other things, his speech, his motor control (both fine and gross) and his balance. He cannot walk unaided and gets around by crawling, tricycle, walker and, until recently, pushchair.
Flynn has now outgrown his pushchair and needs a wheelchair. So the whole family took a trip to a special needs exhibition to find one suitable for him. We tried all shapes and sizes until finding one which is ideal – it is rugged enough to allow Flynn to get to places where his friends and family play (countryside and beaches) and is capable of lasting Flynn well into adulthood. Perhaps more important however, is the fact that, because the large wheels are in front of Flynn, it allows him the independence to push himself - something he could not do in any of the other wheelchairs we tried.
However, it is not cheap. The total cost is £2,387 and this is the reason Alistair (Flynn’s Dad) and his Uncle Darren are running the Swansea 10K and asking you to sponsor them. Any contribution would be most welcome and all will go directly towards funding Flynn’s new wheelchair which will give him a far happier, mobile and sociable lifestyle. Thank you.
